If there is one thing people everywhere love, it just might be coffee — more than 2 billion cups are consumed on this planet every single day. In this blog post, we explore different coffees from around the world, their origins, and their unique brews.
#1 Vietnam’s Egg Coffee
During the Vietnam War, when milk was scarce, the innovative people of Hanoi devised a remarkable substitute known as Egg Coffee. Combining espresso, egg yolk, and sweetened condensed milk, this unique brew became a cherished local favourite, offering a rich and nourishing alternative.
Here’s the recipe: You’ll need the following:
- 336g Espresso
- 1 Egg Yolk
- 77.4g Sweetened Condensed Milk
Directions:
- Brew 2 cups of espresso.
- Whip the egg yolk and sweetened condensed milk until light frothy or soft peaks.
- Add the egg mixture on top.
#2 Turk Kahvesi
Introduced to Turkey during the Ottoman Empire, Turk Kahvesi gained popularity when Governor Ozmadeir Pasha served it to Sultan Suleiman. Despite a temporary ban on coffee due to religious reasons, the prohibition was eventually lifted, allowing this lighter, less bitter brew to become a treasured part of Turkish culture.
#3 Cafe de Olla
In the Mexican Revolution, soldiers seeking warmth and comfort created Cafe de Olla. Blending coffee with aromatic spices, such as cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise, they enjoyed this soothing drink during their cold nights. Today, it continues to be a beloved beverage, evoking a sense of tradition and history.
You’ll need Water, Ground Coffee, Piloncillo, Cinnamon Sticks, Whole Cloves, and Star Anise.
Directions:
- Add water, piloncillo, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise to an olla de barro or medium pot.
- Place over medium-high heat and boil, stirring occasionally so the piloncillo fully dissolves.
- Remove the olla or pot from the heat and add the coffee. Stir it, cover it, and let it steep for 6–8 minutes.
- Pour the coffee through a fine mesh strainer and serve!
